A Message From the Mayor

Dear Friends & Neighbors:

Our community enjoys a very special relationship with our natural environment and would greatly benefit by fostering many of the principals of a "Green City." Environmental responsibility can help us meet many of the challenges we face as a community.

Our City can take the first steps by evaluating purchases, practices, policies and ordinances to demonstrate a serious commitment to our precious natural resources and uniquely pristine environment.

I believe adopting sustainable practices and policies will be good for our economy, good for our businesses and improve our quality of life. I believe it’s not just the smart thing to do, it’s the right thing to do!

Our City Council has already begun by joining cities across the country in signing the "Urban Environmental Accords," a set of goals and actions that are consistent with becoming a "Green City." In the next months and years we will move forward to address many issues such as recycling, becoming more efficient in the use of energy, and ridding our community of potential harmful chemicals and poisons.

Below are a few areas where we can get started:

• Purchase energy efficient products, vehicles and renewable energy
sources
• Prohibit the use of products that pollute or poison the environment or
our aquifers.
• Promote recycling and the use of products made with recycled materials
• Protect and encourage native plants, animals, and open space
• Promote and support energy efficient public transportation options
• Reduce waste of energy and materials
• Encourage green building practices

Join with us as we make Pacific Grove healthier, more self sufficient, and bring a brighter future for our residents and local shop owners.

Best Regards

Daniel Cort
